BOXING The RING

"The RING" Magazine, November 1964


*The important theme in the November issue was historical,
it was related to Madison Square Gardens and the Gillette
sponsored weekly TV fights.  As reported in "The RING"
that November the article was called:
"THE END OF AN ERA in GARDEN BOXING"
and the last bout was August 21, 1964 between Johnny Persol and
Henry Hank.  


The magazine also had some photos of past televised bouts
including the first with Willie Pep vs Chalky Wight in as  featherweight
title fight on September 29, 1944.


*In other news reported was The RING's fighter of the month being
Billy Daniels. And, two of the eight Prospects For The Month were  

Chuck Wepner of New Jersey and Johnny Sharpe of Los Angeles.


*In the ring ratings as of September 11, 1964 the top lightweight
contender was England's Dave Charnley  and the top Jr. lightweight
was Johnny Bizzarro (sic)  of Erie, Pa.


*One of the bouts reported was the heavyweight fight in which 
Billy Daniels earned a split decision over Doug Jones.


*Hall of Fame inductees for 1963 were reported and included
the modern era: Willie Pep, the old-timers: Tom Gibbons,
and for the Pioneers it was Jem Ward.  Also, there was a 
discussion of the 1964 nominees with some hints if whom 
may get picked.


*In the rings around the world, there was a Canadian report
from Fred Bishop on "The Canadian Maritimes".  Fred reprted
on activity at Glace Bay, New Glasgow, and Halifax.
Some names of boxers: Tyrone Gardiner and his defense of the
Canadian lightweight title with Fernand Chretien at the Miner's
Forum in Glace Bay, Carl Baldwin, Rocky MacDougal.  In Pictou
it was Don Chisholm, amateurs mentiond were L. Hafey and 
and Tiger Jackson. Also, mentioned was Jackie Hayden.
