BOXING ILLUSTRATED, April 1970

"BOXING ILLUSTRATE, APRIL 1970" review: By Brian Zelley

This magazine was called a special "collector's issue", and with
a key story by Lew Eskin titled:  "Those Swinging '60's Saw
a Lot of Changes  in the World of Boxing" and the selection
of Emile Griffith as "Fighter of the Decade".  Concerning the
selection of Emile Griffith, I couldn't agree more as he was the
boxer that I picked as the top fighter of the Sizzling Sixties.

In his article, Lew selected Cassius Clay, Emile Griffith,
Eder Jofre, Flash Elorde, Carlos Ortiz and Dick Tiger
as stand outs in the past ten years.  Mention was also
made about Harold Johnson and Joe Brown.

The article included a listing of all the key moments
The first listed ittem was the January 22, 1960 event
that saw Sugar Ray Robinson lose to Paul Pender.
The last event listed was the December 29, 1969
signing of the fight contract between JOE FRAZIER
and JIMMY ELLIS.

*the eight page summary of events and happenings
included thumb nail photos of many boxers including:

BOXING The RING

BOXING's "The RING" Magazine  1964: By Brian Zelley

"The RING" Magazine, November 1964

*The important theme in the November issue was historical,
it was related to Madison Square Gardens and the Gillette
sponsored weekly TV fights.  As reported in "The RING"
that November the article was called:
"THE END OF AN ERA in GARDEN BOXING"
and the last bout was August 21, 1964 between Johnny Persol and
Henry Hank.

The magazine also had some photos of past televised bouts
including the first with Willie Pep vs Chalky Wight in as  featherweight
title fight on September 29, 1944.

*In other news reported was The RING's fighter of the month being
Billy Daniels. And, two of the eight Prospects For The Month were

Chuck Wepner of New Jersey and Johnny Sharpe of Los Angeles.

*In the ring ratings as of September 11, 1964 the top lightweight
contender was England's Dave Charnley  and the top Jr. lightweight
was Johnny Bizzarro (sic)  of Erie, Pa.

*One of the bouts reported was the heavyweight fight in which
Billy Daniels earned a split decision over Doug Jones.

*Hall of Fame inductees for 1963 were reported and included
the modern era: Willie Pep, the old-timers: Tom Gibbons,
and for the Pioneers it was Jem Ward.  Also, there was a
discussion of the 1964 nominees with some hints if whom
may get picked.

*In the rings around the world, there was a Canadian report
from Fred Bishop on "The Canadian Maritimes".  Fred reprted
on activity at Glace Bay, New Glasgow, and Halifax.
Some names of boxers: Tyrone Gardiner and his defense of the
Canadian lightweight title with Fernand Chretien at the Miner's
Forum in Glace Bay, Carl Baldwin, Rocky MacDougal.  In Pictou

KO PRESENTS BOXING 2006

KO BOXING 2006, special issue magazine :  By Brian Zelley

It was published by the KO group founded by Stanley Weston, and the 2006 publisher was
Stuart M. Saks and the editor-in-chief Nigel Collins.  Published by London Publishing
Company.

"Mexican Fighters
A very interesting article by Willaim Dettloff  titled
"The 20 Greates Mexican Fighters Of All-Time"
*the 20 chosen by William in-order of appearance were:
Julio Cesar Chavez, Ruben Olivares, Miguel Canto, Carlos Zarate, Salvador Sanchez,
Vincente Saldivar, Ricardo Lopez, Kid Azteca, Jose Beccera, Humberto Gonzalez,
Baby Arizmendi, Pipino Cuevas, Chalky Wright, Juan Zurita, Carlos Palomino,
Jose Ramirez,Lupe Pintor, Daniel Zaragoza,  Rodolfo Gonzalez, Jesus Pimentael,.

*in the story about Zaragoza, there are references to bouts with boxers
Paul Bamle, Frankie Duarte and many others.

*For Vincente Saldivar, there was a two page phot of Saldivar and
Raule Rojas following the bout that took place on May 10, 1965
in Los Angeles.

A real Golden Oldie article was called:
"LISTON & LOUIS Unlikely Friends With Too Much In Common.
The author was Don Stradle.

"BATTLE of the LEGENDS"
some of the bouts were:
Boxers Bobby Chacon vs Wilfredo Gome, Marvin Hagler vs jake LaMotta,
Joe Frazier vs Larry Holmes,Jose Napoles vs Luis Rodriguez.                                                   Persons that were asked to pick a potental winner included:
Jack Obermayer, Cornelius Boza-Edwars and Grant Phillips
for the first fantasy bout, Teddy Brenner Al Certo and Sal Rappa for the
Hagler - LaMotta bout, Dave Anderson, jay Bright and Teddy Brenner
for Frazier - Holmes., and Angelo Dundee, Emile Griffith and hank Kaplan
for the Napoles - Rodriguez bout.

For the Napoles vs Rodriguea at their prime and best, I would pick Napoles.
Angelo as expected picked Luis, Emile picked Napoles, and Kaplan
picked Rodriquez by points )a perfect split-decision which would come as
no surprise.  But, we all know that when all is said and done that
LUIS RODRIGUEZ  is Angelo's pride and joy.

*There was plenty of stuff about the active boxer of the day but
it was JERMAIN TAYLOR that appeared on the cover of the magazine.

*Media Review:  Thumbs-up piece on the BoxRec internet site.
The review was done by Eric Raskin who is listed as a contributing
editor of the KO magazine in 2006.

BOXING ILLUSTRATED, review of October 1964

BOXING ILLUSTRATED  revisited:  by Brian Zelley

One of the earliest boxing magazines that I purchased at
the local news outlet was back in 1964.  One of those was
the October 1964 issue which featured a variety of curren
stories of 1964 and some flashbacks  of previous years.

The main active bout reported was a preview of the
light-heavyweight title fight between
WillIe Pastrano vs Terry Downes.

Some of the fight results reported included:
*Dick Tiger vs Jose Gonzalez, Percy Hayles vs Paulie Armstead,
Johnny Bizzarro vs Frankie Narvaez, Sugar Ray Robinson vs
Art Hernandez, Cleveland Williams vs Sonny Banks and
Jose Stable vs Gabe Terronez.

FLASHBACKS;
*Two old fights recalled from the past included the
middleweight bout between Rocky Graziano and
Tony Janiro, and the flyweight title fight between
Jimmy Wilde and Pancho Villa.

A featured piece: "THE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS"
by Boxing Illustrated's managing editor Robert Thornton.
The article was very well presented and covered every
title fight from the 1903 Jack Root vs Kid McCoy
fight that took place in Detroit, Michigan to the 1964
bout between champion Willie Pastrano vs Gregorio Peralta.

The Rocky Graziano vs Tony Janiro article was titled:
"Buddies - Until The Bell Rang". As a bonus to the
article there was a current photo of Tony Janiro
visititing the BI office and he was quoted about his
golden days of boxing when he said:
"It was a glorious pursuit of happiness."
Of course for Tony, much of that pursuit was
also outside of the ring being the playboy type
and spending money fast.  At the time of the
story TONY JANIRO  was a bartender at the
"Mansfield Lounge:" and was living in
Manhatten's Washington Heights  section with
his wife and son.
